How to Keep Things Cool as Temperatures Start to Warm
Keeping things cool during an Illinois summer is essential. However, if you don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on cooling costs, it’s important that you have some tricks up your sleeve for keeping things cool as temperatures start to warm.
Close the Blinds
It might seem a little dreary to keep the blinds closed in the middle of the day, but if you need your fill of vitamin D, all you have to do is step outside! Keeping the blinds closed will help to prevent sunlight--and therefore heat–from entering your home and warming things up.
Keep Your Body Cool
One way to beat the heat is to focus on keeping your body cool, even if the air around you is sweltering. Try taking a two-minute cold shower, staying well hydrated, and drinking a cool beverage if you’re feeling hot. Wearing the right clothing for the season can help, too. Remember that heat rises, so sticking to lower parts of the house–especially for bedtime–can help.
Open the Window and Turn on the Ceiling Fan at Night
Try to keep your windows and doors closed during the day when you have the A/C on as much as possible. However, at night, you may be able to get by with turning the air conditioner off and opening the windows, turning on a ceiling fan, and taking advantage of the fresh air. This is an easy way to cool your home without spending much on utilities.
Make Sure Your Air Conditioner Is Operating As Efficiently As Possible
Even if you’re using the other tricks listed above to stay cool, you’ll probably be running your air conditioner at least part of the time, too. If you want to maximize efficiency and cut costs, you’ll need to invest in air conditioner repair and HVAC maintenance. When your air filters are clogged, your ducts are dirty, or your system hasn’t been serviced, you won’t be getting the coolest of the cold air that’s possible, you’ll face indoor air pollution problems, and you can be sure that you’ll see an increase in your cooling bill.
