Is It Time to Uncover My Air Conditioner?
Once summertime is over and the necessity of having air conditioning within the home is no longer pressing, many homeowners in Illinois opt to cover their A/Cs, and for good reason; covering your air conditioner helps to protect it from debris that accumulates in the fall and winter.
Once it’s summertime, however, you’ll need to uncover your air conditioner once again before you use it. And as the weather is starting to warm and the days are beginning to get longer, you may be wondering: Is it time to uncover my air conditioner?
Why You Cover Your A/C Unit in the First Place
First off, do you know why you are supposed to cover your air conditioner in the first place? It’s not to protect it from the cold, nor keep it free of dirt, snow, or moisture (all common misconceptions). Instead, the whole point of covering your air conditioner is to keep out things like seeds, nuts, and leaves that are all very common during an Illinois fall. That’s right; autumn’s really the only time that having your A/C unit covered is a must. In fact, keeping your unit covered for too long, or over-covering your unit (you should always leave a little bit exposed) can actually result in moisture getting trapped, leading to rust and corrosion.
It’s Time to Pull that Cover Off
Since you really only need your air conditioner covered in the fall, now’s the perfect time to remove the cover. Not only is it good to get the thing off early to be able to check it off your list of spring tasks, but you should actually run your air conditioner now too in order to check for any problems, diagnose issues, and ensure things are running smoothly.
