At-home HVAC Check: Things to Look at Before You Call a Technician
Your home’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system has numerous working parts, and if a single one breaks, requires maintenance, or is defective, the entire system could experience a glitch. Whether in the middle of summer or during the heart of winter, an HVAC problem could leave you frustrated and itching for a quick fix. Before you call a technician, though, here are some basic things that you can check on your own at home–
Inspect Your Air Filter
Air filters are often overlooked, despite their critical contribution to the health of your HVAC system. If things aren’t running smoothly, inspect your air filter – if it’s dirty, replace it immediately.
Look at Your Vents
Just like the air filter, your system’s vents can get dirty and clogged, and when they do, problems can arise. Check ducts, vents, and grills for dust or debris build up – if there is any buildup or blockage, remove it and see if that doesn’t get your system operating efficiently again.
Check Circuit Breakers and Batteries
It can be embarrassing to call a professional for an HVAC repair only to find out that the only thing wrong is a loss of power. Before you call a pro, check to make sure that the circuit breaker didn’t get flipped and that batteries in your remote or thermostat aren’t dead. Sometimes, a fix is as simple as replacing batteries of flipping a switch back on.
Routine Maintenance Can Help
If something is wrong with your HVAC system, it’s wise to check the above before your rush to call a professional. If the above fixes don’t do the job, a quick call to an HVAC technician may do the job – often, technicians can walk you through some solutions over the phone. If that’s not enough, an in-person assessment may be necessary to diagnose the issue.
As a note, keep in mind that routine maintenance of your HVAC system can help to mitigate breakdowns and will extend the longevity of your system. Our team can guide you through basic maintenance-musts.
